Coming in at a ¥121 (¥110 cost + 10% service charge), the Lemon Tart isn’t the best deal you’ll find for dessert in Shanghai, but it is a unique experience for your taste buds that should be had at least once as this little lemon packs a big taste-bud punch!
Imagine eating an entire lemon—skin and all, and LOVING it! The basic idea of the magic lemon tart is that they soak the whole lemon in sugar water. Over a period of three days they soak, then scrape the insides, then soak, then scrape… you get the idea… until the skin is just the thin zest portion. At this point they take the skin, and re-stuff it with lemon cream and lemon sorbet, with a few pieces of grapefruit for an added tangy punch.
Served with a lemon cookie stick, you’ll enjoy every bite—and then of course wish there was more.
As you can see from the above photo, it’s the dessert to get at Mr. & Mrs. The only person in our group who got a different dessert, got a different dessert + the lemon tart!
Make reservations early, and ask for a table near the window so you can enjoy the ever-spectacular view of the Bund and the skyscrapers of the Pudong Financial District while you eat. Even if you don’t score window-side seats, Mr. & Mrs. has a lovely outdoor terrace that you can pop out to for some Kodak moments with the city skyline backdrop.
To be able to afford this tasty treat, I combined the night with a cheaper meal at another location. But if you’re up for a night out, Mr. & Mrs. Bund also has a full dinner selection that some will rave about. If you want to try their food for a lower price, check out their “Late Night Menu” offered from 11p–2a, Thursday–Saturday.
*Tip: If you combine your trip with someone’s birthday you’ll be treated to a sound & mini-firecracker spectacular. I won’t give too much away, but it’s definitely a fun experience.
